Advisory centers are outpatient services with non medical nature, which are located in educational institutions and provide preventive services, early intervention, crisis intervention, counseling and specialized type of interventions thus covering all three levels of care, primary, secondary and tertiary (Kalatzis-Azizi, 1996).
The Counseling Center, University of Piraeus was founded in 1995 on the initiative and decision of the Rector of the University of Piraeus in the research programs of the Centre of Piraeus University and funded by it.
The main recipients of these services are students. This is a special group of young people aged 18-25 years who have completed the basic course and have been imported in Higher Education. These young people are at a particular developmental stage which is quite intense and often accompanied by some critical events. It is particularly important for the young person as characterized by the biological and psycho-emotional maturation of the efforts of the new determination of identity and social role, while the desire for autonomy from their family and their career choices.
The Counseling Center of the University of Piraeus, recognizing that students are a population with specific needs, offering specialized services to students, responding in a holistic to their needs. Appeals to students who find it difficult to cope with problems and solve them, and those who need support in their decisions to engage in life choices.
The main way to tackle the problems is counseling in individual and team level. It is a dynamic process of communication is provided by trained experts to facilitate the individual issues that interest and concern. During this process the person may contact to express thoughts, concerns, worries, fears in a safe context, declare that needs help and also to risk emotionally and to examine the cognitive assessments for situations after the Self-concept extends.
The operating framework of the department is divided into three levels:
- Advisory assistance and psychological support,
- research,
- social intervention.
