Optional Module-Semester 6:
Mass Media English

(Semester 6)

Course Description

In the first part, the course focuses on the students’ development of competence and confidence in reading newspapers, journals, and web sites in order to become efficient, discerning and critical readers. In this direction, students are trained in recognising the writer/columnist’s stance and strategies as well as in decoding headlines. They also practise their writing skills in summaries and letters to the editor with the use of appropriate vocabulary and style.
In the second part, the focus shifts towards the students’ familiarisation with news bulletins, so as comprehension of the incoming information through the English language become possible. In contrast to the reading of an article in a newspaper, listening requires closer attention and higher concentration, as the listener is unable to go back to any point of the spoken text (real time listening).
